Healthy Eyes for World Health Month

Need you know that World Health Day is celebrated in April? Held on the 7th of April each year, it is the term for an annual day dedicated to promoting the benefits of good health and wellbeing worldwide. This year, World Health Day coincides with the 75th anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organisation. With this in mind, we share our top tips on how to keep your eyes healthy

It’s simple to incorporate most eye care tips into your life as soon as you know about them. World Health Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the everyday steps that most people can take to keep their eye health in top condition.

Diet

We all know deep down inside that we could be eating more healthy food. Knowing exactly what advice to follow can be hard at times, with so many different diets and nutritional advice. Sometimes it helps to start with a specific focus, like your eye health. If you want to incorporate foods that support your vision in your diet, aim for oily fish, nuts, citrus fruits, eggs and leafy greens. These contain omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, copper, Vitamins A, C and E -all the right nutrients that are needed to protect your overall eye health.

Protection isn’t just for your skin

It isn’t just our skin that needs protection from the rays of the sun. Ensure that you are wearing sunglasses that will block out harmful UV rays. You can usually check that you’re covered by looking at the label. If you usually wear glasses, ask your local optician about prescription sunglasses so that you can protect your eyes without the need of wearing clip-ons with your regular glasses.

Know Your History

Understanding any family history of specific eye conditions like glaucoma or macular degeneration, along with other health conditions that affect the eyes, like diabetes can help you to be aware of additional steps you may need to take. Ensure that your optician has the right information and it could make a big difference when it comes to the early diagnosis and treatment of hereditary conditions.

Give Yourself A Screen Break

Whether you spend your day in an office, watch television or enjoy browsing on your phone before bed, be aware of the effect that all these activities can have on your eyes. Remember to take regular breaks. A handy rule of thumb is to take 20 seconds to look 20 feet away every 20 minutes.

Regular Check Ups

One of the best ways to ensure that your eyesight is in the best condition it can be is to regularly attend check-ups with your optician. This can help to diagnose potential complications and also just keep you informed of your eye health.
