Diabetes Awareness Week

This years’ focus of Diabetes Awareness Week is the health checks needs when you have diabetes – the OCCS look at the eye health checks required when diagnosed with Diabetes.

When diagnosed with diabetes, it is important to attend your diabetic eye health screenings in addition to your regular eye tests. A Diabetic Eye Health Check is to review diabetic retinopathy: which is a condition caused by damage to the retina. These appointments involve a Photo of the eye to check for changes and may also include drops that dilate the eye to help achieve a clearer picture and/or a quick vision check. These appointments should occur annually or every 2 years if previous check was clear. Early detection and treatment can reduce /prevent vision damage and these health checks keep patients on top of this.

Your regular eye tests will focus on assessing your visual acuity and prescribing corrective prescriptions if required.

If you are not receiving your Diabetic eye checks and feel you should be contact your GP or hospital team to discuss and arrange.
