Cataract Awareness Month & National Sunglasses Day

With National Sunglasses Day upon us (27 June 2025), the OCCS wish to share their top tips for the importance of “sunnies” to protect us.

UVA (Ultraviolet A) is what we want to protect ourselves from. It is known that long term exposure to UVA is linked to the development of cataracts, skin cancer and retinal damage.

UVB is known for sunburn/tanning and also can be a factor in cataracts and skin cancers developing. This can come from artificial light sources as well as the sun.

To ensure the sunglasses we choose are up to the job, the OCCS recommend checking for the British Standards BSEN + CE Mark on the Sunglasses. This being present will confirm you have Full UVA + B protection

The OCCS would also recommend ensuring you have the best lens type for specific activities:

  • Polarised Lenses help to reduce glare, especially in water sports
  • Photochromic lenses adapt to changing light conditions, making them ideal for activities like cycling and skiing
  • Wraparound frames and durable materials like TR90 are also a great choice for sports
